Counselor's News Bits
As the school counselor, I am available to work individual children, small groups of students, parents and staff when a need becomes apparent. My current schedule allows me to be in each building every week as follows:
Helena Elementary (369-2865) Monday and Thursday
John Glenn Elementary (279-4533) Tuesday , Wednesday & Friday
Children come to school to learn, work and play. I hope to help each child prepare to become proactive lifelong learners with the skills they need to live a fulfilling, satisfying life. Classroom Guidance lessons are selected to meet the needs of children developmentally and are based on curriculum standards and grade level expectations established by the state in three main areas: Personal/Social, Academic, and Career Development. Topics will include showing respect, being responsible and developing the skills necessary to be a successful student. All students are encouraged to be proactive and choose to do their best at school- to pay attention, work hard and listen carefully. I follow an ABC approach; A is for Actions (what you choose to say and do), B is for Beliefs (what you think or believe to be true), and C which is for Character (the kind of person you are). A+B=C where actions combined with beliefs results in your character. Each student is asked, "Are you the person you want to be?"
Get involved and stay active with your child’s school. Ask your child open ended questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer, and then show an interest in their response. Share ideas to help your child learn and remind them of skills and strategies they have learned in the past. Listening will provide the opportunity for you to discuss issues with them. Communicate regularly with your child’s teacher and review the papers, notes and projects they bring home.
Read with your child frequently. Have them tell you in their own words what the story is about. Then ask them to predict what will happen next. Visit the school and local community library when possible. Check out books for you and your child to read. When they are old enough get them a library card of their own. Life time habits are often developed early in childhood.
Encourage your child to be a person of good character through your actions and words; remember children most often model the behavior of adults in their lives. They repeat and learn what they see you doing much more frequently than what you tell them to do. Remember A+B=C, ask yourself, "Are you the person you want to be?"
As the 2016-17 school year begins, reflect on ways you can encourage growth and learning. Set goals together and track progress, post successes and encouraging notes. Spend time with your children; nothing can replace the memories of talking, playing and laughing together.
If you have questions or wish to visit with me, please call. If I am not available please leave a message. In case of an emergency, please ask for the building principal or notify the staff taking the message that it is important. Your child will be most successful if we work together in his/her best interest.
